New to Havasu? www.newtohavasu.net
In 1968 Robert McCulloch purchased the London Bridge from the City of London. The bridge was dismantled brick by brick and each section marked and numbered in the same way it was built. The granite pieces were stacked at the Surrey Commercial Docks and then shipped through the Panama Canal to Long Beach California. From Long Breach the granite blocks were trucked approximately 300 miles to Lake Havasu.
On October 10, 1971 the bridge opened and the town had a celebration with fireworks, a parade, entertainment and the release of hundreds of balloons. Still to this day Lake Havasu celebrates London Bridge Days every year and has a celebration to commemorate the building of the bridge.
Today, Lake Havasu City is the home to well over 50,000 residents and numerous summer and winter visitors, many who own second homes here equal to nearly 25% of the homes in town!.
Thousands of families have discovered Lake Havasu City and want to get their children out of the big city and into more of a small town atmosphere. There are six elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school. These public schools teach over 6,000 students. In addition, there are several religious oriented and private schools. A junior college, Mohave Community College, also has a campus in Lake Havasu City.
